AS opening sequence samples from youtube

These are a few opening sequences from other media students. The examples show the bad and good aspects that an opening sequence needs to include which will help my group to produce our opening sequence.

Targets to improve opening sequence

TARGETS
Our group needs to think about :

- Low/high key lighting to emphasise light and shadow.
- An action that makes the character have a daydream for example a dog licking the characters
face makes the character dream about kissing their partner.
- An other idea for a opening sequence which will show what the film will be about for example
the woman might kill her lover however she thought that he was someone else (her husband)
- Include a voice over as Film Noir commonly uses a voice over of the main character to tell the
   narrative.

Overall the whole story is good however the opening sequence does not really tell what the story will be about.

These targets can be achieved by doing more research in neo-noir films.

Job Allocations

My group discussed on who will be allocated with what job and this presentation shows the different things that each job includes.

Editing the preliminary and targets

My group has started to edit our preliminary on the imovie program
   - I have learnt that we need to practice more on the program as it was a bit difficult to use for the first time however  the notes we took during our teachers demonstration helped to the basic things that can be done.

Any mistakes you have made :
 - As we did not have a lot of time to film our preliminary we could not include some shots that we originally had in our story board which made it difficult in the editing process. This has taught us that we need to work quick and plan thoroughly how and when we will record our shots.

Targets:
 - The ways our group can improve is by managing our time better to be able to finish filming more quicker.
 - To practice more on the editing program and help each other more if one of us might find it difficult.

Recording the Preliminary task

Photos of my group
recording our preliminary.
Today we recorded our preliminary task in our groups.
 - We followed the storyboard and the overhead plan to help us with
     recording.
- We used folders, papers and stationary for our props to make the scene
show that it is set in an office.
- We recorded all the compulsory shots needed for the preliminary -
match on action, two shot, over the shoulder shot, reverse shot
and following the 180 degree rule.
- It was difficult to film in the short space of time we were gotten
furthermore we had to share the area where we recorded with other
groups which was a problem as both groups had different scenes to
     record.
Overall I thought that the recording of the preliminary task went to plan because we all respected each others views and finished before the end of the time given. This preliminary will help us to prepare for our group opening sequence as we will know what to do to prepare before recording the opening.

imovie editing program

Today in class we went on the Macintosh computers and went through the imovie program that will be used for the preliminary task.
We learned how to :
  • Record ourselves with the MAC camera
  • Edit clips

                - combine clips together on the timeline
                - add different transitions to the clips
                - separate clips and audio
                - cut clips
                - know how to view the edited clip

I think that the program will help my group with the filming with the special effects that will be used.

Camera Equipment

Today in class we were introduced to the camera equipment that my group will be using to record our preliminary task.
      - We were shown how to use the tripod and mini tripod and how to attach the camera to the
         tripods.
      - We were shown the directional microphone that can be used to record instead of the built in
microphone in the camera for better sound quality.
      - Shown how to turn on/off, record and insert a tape in the camera.

Our camera and tripod.

Also we recored ourselves giving our names and candidate numbers to put at the start of our preliminary tasks.

The experience of starting filming to me is exciting as Im learning new things about producing a film and learning new skills.

Narrative research - Todorov and Propp

I researched the different narratives used to give my group the knowledge of films to help produce my opening sequence.

From researching theorists and the elements of narrative i have learnt that all films have equlibrium, disequilibium and new equilibrium moreover all films have binary opposition e.g good/evil.

This influences my groups opening sequence because it includes equlibrium, disequilibium and new equilibrium also include flashbacks.

Group work

Today I was put into a group to produce our opening sequence. We discussed our own ideas and planned out what our opening sequence will be about.

Loreta:
Film noir - A girl is kidnapped by a clown who kills the girl accidently.
Dafne:
Drama - A couple fighting, the woman runs away.
Karolina:
Film noir - A woman who kills her husband and asks/lies an inspector to help her find him.

As a group we have decided to join our ideas together, the opening sequence will be modern film noir with will include crime and drama.

The whole story:
A couple fighting because of the husbands jealously, the wife is having an affair. The husband gets angry and abuses/beats his wife however the wife accidently in self-defense kills her husband.
The main characters:
Wife
Husband (Inspector)
Man (Manstress)
Opening sequence:
The wife and husband are having dinner, the husband is speaking to his wife while she is day dreaming(remembering) of herself and her manstress.
- there will be a flashback of the wife and manstress after a shot of her with her hand on her chin.

Film club

In film club i watched 'The Village' (2004)
'The Village' is a thriller about a isolated village which is surrounded by creatures. When Lucius tries to get medical supplies then animal bodies start to appear around the village, the people fear for their safety.

I think the film was good as it did thrill the audience by using suspense, the non diegetic music starts of slow and increase this. Furthermore the music uses string instruments to be able to go from a slow pitch to a quick high one which creates tension.

Self and Peer assessment of individual presentation

Peer Assessment :
What Went Well (www)
- Lots of information
Even Better If (EBI)
- Interact with audience and not read from board.

Self Assessment :
What Went Well (www)
- Had lots of information with clear introduction.
- Relevant images to support ideas.
- Considered what whole film and opening sequence would be about including storyboard.
Even Better If (EBI)
- If interacted more with audience , without reading from the board.
- If considered music for my own film.
- If thought of the conventions and obstacles and filming problems.
The grade I would give myself is a level 2-3 because there is research of similar products, potential target audience and storyboard however there is not enough research of actors, locations and costumes.

Individual Presentation

This presentation has examples of different genres, different distribution companies and the BBFC. It also includes what genre I chosen for my opening sequence and a idea of what it would be about.

Interests

I like all genres such as action, drama, comedies and many more. However my favorite genre is horror/thriller.

I mostly like the slasher, zombies, phycological and comedy horror films such as :
- Scream series
- I Know What You Did Last Summer 1997
- Freddy vs. Jason  2003
- The Ring 2002
- Child's play (Chucky)
- Poltergeist 1982
- Saw series
- The Grudge
- Shawn of  the dead
- Dawn of the dead

I like watching horror films because I enjoy being scared, the ways the movie scare the audience by using suspense and the way they make the murders/dead bodies look realistic.

Analysis of last year 12 work

I was given web addresses to two blogs from last year 12 class. This helped my know the way my blog should be laid out for people to see my work clearly.

What i have done and learnt

What i have done for G321 :
  • I have been researching about different genres, their history and what they consist of.
  • I have seen a few opening sequences of different type of films from different genres.
What i have learnt :
  • I have learnt that the opening sequence of films make the audience interested in the film and make them watch it to the end (a first good impression)

Targets to improve

  1. To watch more movies from different genres to understand what they consist of and what are the common things that each genre has.
  2. Research more on the different music that my specific genre has.
  3. Start thinking about the problems that will occur with filming the scenes.

G321 and marks

G321

- AO3 to assess candidates’ ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and
  creative skills.
- AO2 to assess candidates’ application of knowledge and understanding in evaluating their own work, showing
how meanings and responses are  created.
- AO4 to assess candidates’ ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research.

This is a coursework unit, internally assessed and externally moderated. Candidates produce a media artefact in response to briefs set by OCR plus some appropriate evidence of research and planning. This offers the opportunity for skills development to be assessed, as well as a final finished piece.

Video
Task : the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes.
All video and audio material must be original, produced by the candidate, with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source.
The unit is marked out of a total of 100 marks:
- 20 marks for the presentation of the planning and research.
- 60 marks for the construction.
- 20 marks for the evaluation.
